Contemporary art residency programme and exhibition with Burghley House for 2013
The contemporary art exhibition ‘Fresh Take’ features the work of 6 artists with a broad range of practices – from street art to sugarcraft. Their responses to the House’s interior and its history, produced during a residency programme, juxtapose the traditions of Burghley with current contexts: their final works are on display in the House’s State rooms this autumn.
These new artworks eschew traditional approaches and are innovative in both medium and concept: from Jason Duckmanton’s Danse Macabre zoetrope to Anita Bruce’s silk featherTrophy Birds; the narrative fragments of Sue Shields’ embossed copper and resin and the urban influences of Stuart Payn’s Calligraffik Marquetry Cabinet; the delicate sugar floristry of Kathryn Parsons’ shoes and Lindsey Holmes’ conceptual reworking of the Little Bedlam Club: the works provide a sympathetic but challenging complement to Burghley House’s own exceptional collection.
