“Why it’s not about adult colouring books!” with Alison Hawtin
In the fourth of our current Tuesdays Till Two “Church of Ideas” talks, art therapist Alison Hawtin promises to tell us “What you always wanted to know about Art Therapy (and why it’s not about adult colouring books!)”
Alison will explain the practice and effectiveness of Art Therapy/Art Psychotherapy using anonymised case studies from her many years of work with adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues. She will use these to illustrate how it is beneficial for anyone and everyone – including children, the elderly, sufferers of trauma (abuse, war, post-traumatic stress etc), and for mental well-being of all kinds, including the stresses and malaise often experienced in 21st century living - and she aims to debunk some of the myths around it. Alison would like this to be an interactive session, so please come along with your questions – there may be a little art-making! (optional of course). She will also be able to help you find out more about direct therapy for yourself, someone you care for, or further training at this talk.
As usual the church café will be open from noon, and will be selling a range of hot drinks, and home made cakes, scones, and other baked goodies with all profits from the café going to The Green Backyard. The talk will begin at 1pm and will be followed by an opportunity for discussion and questions. Admission to the talk is free, but a donation to help cover costs will be appreciated. The suggested donation is £3.
Alison Hawtin of Art Therapy in Peterborough & Cambridgeshire is a freelance HCPC and BAAT registered Consultant Practitioner Art Therapist, Clinical Supervisor, Trainer and Artist, based in Peterborough. She has worked in community arts and art therapies for over 20 years – working, teaching and presenting at conferences in the UK, Montpelier, Romania and Russia. She has engaged in collaborative research and published articles in Inscape:International Journal of Art Therapy and its sister Newsbriefing, and contributed to the book ‘Art Therapy with Physical Conditions’ (2015) edited by M Liebmann & S Weston. She has been a visiting lecturer on MA Trainings at the Universities of Hertfordshire and Anglia Ruskin in Cambridge and continues to be interested in collaborative working, non-verbal expression, facilitating others to find their creativity and spirituality in the arts therapies.
