John Boden’s The Ballad of Little Musgrave
Part of Aldeburgh Music’s_ Inspired by Britten_ series
Featuring Jon Boden, James Findlay, Tim Van Eyken, Mary Hampton, & Peterborough Male Voice Choir
AT PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL
PLEASE NOTE: seats for this performance are unallocated.
To mark the Benjamin Britten Centenary, one of today’s leading folk music composer/performers, Jon Boden (founder and leader of
Bellowhead, composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company, artist-in-residence at The SouthBank Centre) takes an enduring English ballad and re-tells it in a compact and powerful musical drama. It is woven through Britten’s setting of The Ballad of Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard in a new piece featuring a stellar cast of soloists from the world of folk, musicians from Aldeburgh Music and Peterborough Male Voice Choir.
This very special event will be beautifully and imaginatively staged in the atmospheric setting of Peterborough Cathedral, which lends itself to the timeless story of love and betrayal, kinship and class, rage and revenge: the servant Musgrave’s fatally doomed love for his lord’s wife.
_The Ballad of Little Musgrave _will be preceded by Jon Boden & Friends performing a range of British folk songs and ballads. This concert premiered as part of the Britten Centenary celebrations at Snape Maltings in August 2013, and its only other performance will take place this autumn at The Sage, Gateshead – Vivacity is delighted to bring such a unique and prestigious event to Peterborough.
