Humanitarian crisis affecting refugees: discussion
Refugee Support are hosting a discussion about the refugee crisis in Europe. You can hear about the situation firsthand from the founders of the organisation, John Sloan and Paul Hutchings, as well as from other volunteers working on the ground.
What are we doing to help refugees?
The founders of Refugee Support, John Sloan and Paul Hutchings, are touring the country throughout October, giving talks on the refugee crisis in Europe and the work they do in Syrian refugee camps in Greece. There will also be volunteers telling their stories, and the audience will be invited to join in the discussion.
Media coverage of the crisis was sympathetic for a short time in 2015, in response to some of the shocking images, but the problems refugees are facing today are every bit as bad as they were then.
Refugee Support deliver a wide range of services, from providing essential supplies like food and clothing, to opening kitchens capable of catering to hundreds of residents, schools for children and for adults learning languages, and even playgrounds. They have great relations with the UN, International Rescue Committee, and the Greek government, but also with the local communities, buying all of their food from local traders
Refugee Support are continually expanding their services in Greece, and are also sending a team to Bangladesh to help the Rohingya people fleeing Myanmar.
Doors open at 7pm. Entry is free, and so are the refreshments. It should a really interesting, informative evening for everyone.
