20 Stories High – Master Class
The magnificent, award winning, 20 Stories High are running two free master classes on Friday 8th November at Key Theatre. The master classes coincide with their tour of Melody Loses Her Mojo, on at the Key on 8th and 9th November and are aimed at students studying a-level / Btec and above and also teachers / creative professionals working in the field

Director Julia Samuels will be running a master class on script writing, performance and directing for young people.

Choreographer Kwesi Johnson will be exploring choreography, physical theatre and movement. NB this is not a straight dance choreography master class.
20 Stories High create high impact, hard hitting performances for young people aged 13 to 30 year olds. They specialize in fusing art forms e.g hip hop and theatre, beat boxing, dance and visual arts. Their latest production involves choreographer Kwesi Johnson, Beat boxer Hobbit, club artist Mark Wiggins.

Kwesi Johnson: A graduate of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Kwesi has performed with some of the most prolific international companies and choreographers: Phoenix Dance Company, Lloyd Newson, Black Mime Theatre, Company Duroure, CandoCo Dance Company and the Hittite Empire, before creating Kompany Malakhi in 1994. Since creating the company, he has pushed creative boundaries and developed fresh and sophisticated ideas about how work is made, where it is performed and how audiences can get involved. His dance foundation is in Breakin’ (Breakdancing), Hip Hop, physical theatre and contemporary dance, which he uses to create his unique style of work.
Julia Samuels: Julia is Co-Artistic Director of 20 Stories High. For 20 Stories High, Julia has just directed Whole by Philip Osment and created and directed verbatim theatre piece Tales from the MP3 with the Young Actors Company. She also directed Laurence Wilson’s Blackberry Trout Face, which won the Brian Way Award 2010, and also the company’s first production: hip-hop forum theatre tour Last Friday. For the 20 Stories High youth theatre, she directed Rain, created in collaborated with 84 Theater (Tehran) as part of Contacting the World, as well as site-specific piece A Private Viewing. She also co-directed Dark Star Rising and On Me Onez with Keith Saha and was Associate Artist on Ghost Boy and Babul and the Blue Bear. Previous to her work with 20 Stories High, Julia worked as Education Producer at the National Theatre, creating a version of Dr. Faustus for young audiences for the Cottesloe. She also spent 5 years at Theatre Royal Stratford East as Acting Head of Education/Youth Projects Leader. She has also worked on projects for a range of organisations including North West Playwrights, the RSC, Half Moon Young People’s Theatre, Theatre Centre and Soho Theatre.
